Tips for Troubleshooting Your VGA Cables

For decades, we have used different cables to display the visuals our devices send from their graphics cards. The VGA cable has a long record of reliable connections that create images on our monitors, allowing us to see various information from the internet. But when these cables are damaged, we need ways to troubleshoot problems.

Power Down and Unplug the Cables

Like many computers and other devices, powering down and restarting is a reliable way of troubleshooting any problems in your VGA connection. The cable may have an issue connecting to the computer and may not be able to send the signals it needs to the monitor screen. Shutting down the computer, followed by unplugging and replugging the VGA cable before restarting the PC, will refresh the connection. If the connection has a signal and works well, you have solved the problem, but if you still see the issue persist, you’ll need to use other methods.

Check the Ports

A dirty port or a small object lodged in the port will cause a disconnection in the VGA cable and lead to a “no signal” screen on your monitor. It’s essential to keep your ports clean and ensure they don’t have anything in them. Even damaged prongs inside the port may come from the improper insertion of the VGA cable and the inconvenience of a piece of dirt.

If you experience zero connectivity, look at the port and ensure it is clear before moving on to another troubleshooting method for your VGA cable.

Disconnect the VGA Connection on the Computer

Most modern computers have the ability to change between the use of different external devices. When you use VGA cables on a PC, the computer acknowledges the cable as an external source of video; you may change the type of video you use as a VGA connection. To help with troubleshooting, try going into your settings and disconnecting from the VGA connection, then reconnecting to see if anything changes.

Inspect the Material Connecting the Plastic End to the Cord

The VGA cable comes with the standard cabling and a large plastic end that holds the connectors. Given the large shape of the ends, there could be damage to the area where the cable and plastic meet, so inspecting it is a priority to ensure the cable isn’t permanently damaged.

The VGA cable is a great way to connect our computers to monitors and TVs. But when they malfunction, we need to utilize specific measures to ensure they still work.
