Mode Conditioning Patch Cords are required for connecting Gigabit 1000 Base-LX and 10GBASE-LRM routers and switches to multimode cable plants. Wherein transceiver modules transmit only singlemode 1300 nm signals but the existing network is built with multimode cables.

Single-mode lasers that are launched into the center of a multimode fiber can fragment, generating multiple signals that will ultimately confuse the receiver at the opposite end of the fiber. These signals, caused by Differential Mode Delay (DMD) effects, limit the distance lengths for operating Gigabit Ethernet. Mode Conditioning Patch Cords eliminate these issues by offsetting the single-mode entry away from center on a multimode core. This offset creates a transmitted signal that is similar to multimode light emitting diode launches allowing the hardware to correctly interpret the signal.
