A primary consideration for the wire in an HDMI cable is its impedance (resistance). Impedance decreases as wire diameter increases. The CL2 rating indicates that its outer jacket has been designed to burn slowly, thereby making it safe for use inside or through the walls of residential buildings. It also complies with fire safety codes and insurance requirements.

While a small-gauge cable may work in a single short run, it is a potential source of trouble in longer cables especially if you're using switches, couplers, or repeaters along the way. Heavy gauge is a better way to avoid signal loss. Many cables are UL-listed without having an in-wall rating; if it doesn't have CL2 designation printed directly on the jacket, don't assume it's rated for In-wall installation.
